SUPERMARKET giant William Morrisons has agreed that it will increase the price it pays First Milk for cheese by £400 per tonne with immediate effect from Tuesday of this week.

The majority of the cheese that First Milk supplies to Morrisons comes from Haverfordwest creamery in West Wales, with the remainder coming from Campbeltown Creamery; a special Christmas Mull of Kintyre cheese is being planned for the store.

Jeff Halliwell, managing director of the First Milk Cheese Company which supplies all of Morrisons own label cheddar said: ‘In all our conversations with Morrisons, they have not only shown a clear understanding of the issues faced by dairy farmers, but more importantly, they have demonstrated a desire to play a leading role in supporting dairy farmers over the long term. We will continue to work closely with Morrisons to monitor the market over the coming months.’

First Milk is currently working with Morrisons on a range of cheese including a named cheddar from Haverfordwest creamery; Christmas blended cheeses for Mull of Kintyre, Isle of Arran and Isle of Bute; and a range of other new products are being developed.
