CAMPBELTOWN Boys fought back from three goals down at half-time on Saturday when they played against local rivals Tarbert at The Meadows.
During a match played in humid conditions the Boys struggled to settle for the opening 45 minutes, as Tarbert ran riot and scored three deserved goals.
The Boys inaccurate supply to the strikers, and some wasteful shooting, hindered any chance of a comeback, but the Boys rallied for the second period and scored three goals of their own, to earn a satisfying draw.
Almost as soon as the action had begun on Saturday, the away team struck the first blow.
Within three minutes, Prentice saw his cutback placed into the net calmly by MacDougall, finishing under the grasp of Boys keeper MacBrayne.
With the game being played to a relentless pace by either side, chances were numerous, but it was Tarbert who proved the most clinical in front of goal.
The lead was doubled as a cutback was dispatched from the edge of the box, before Prentice earned a penalty and scored to embarrass the Boys.
Determined
Luckily, some stirring words at half-time and a determined second half performance to boot saw the Boys take some pride from a match which could have, potentially, badly damaged confidence instilled in the Boys players from the Oban Tournament the week before.
The comeback started when John McCallum headed home from Archie Johnstone’s corner, and it was the set – piece man Johnstone who earned the opportunity for the second Boys goal, after being bundled down in the box by a flailing leg. Robert McGarrie shot high into the top left hand corner to give the Boys renewed hope that an unlikely equaliser was on the cards.
Then the equaliser came, the watching crowd witnessing the goal of the game. Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Henderson’s run into the box was met with Robert McGarrie’s cross, McGarrie’s tireless attitude paying dividends as he supplied a high ball for Henderson to volley a stunning finish into the top right hand corner of the net.
The Boys will hope to take this second half performance into their first league outing of the season as they host Port Glasgow OBU tomorrow, Saturday, at the Meadows, kick off 2.30 pm.
