TWO men posing workmen were arrested recently for fraud in relation to repair work at a house in the Campbeltown area, Argyll.

Inspector Tom Harper of Campbeltown Police Station, Kintyre advised that there are bogus workmen operating at this time in the Argyll area.

‘It is possible that these males have been operating throughout the Argyll area for an extended period of time,’ said Inspector Harper. ‘Bogus workmen will pressurise you to have work carried out that is often unnecessary or carried out to a poor standard. ‘They will use different methods to try and persuade you to part with your money and you may feel under pressure to pay cash in advance of any work being completed. ‘The best advice I can give is to use companies which come with a personal recommendation, or alternatively established, or locally based companies or workmen’.

If you see or have any concerns about bogus workmen in your area, or if you believe that you may have been a victim of this type of crime, then please contact your local Community Policing Team on: Kintyre and the Islands 01586 862222 or South Kintyre 01586 862233.

ACROSS Kintyre, a clean up operation following recent storms is being put in place over the next few weeks.

The Group for Recycling in Argyll and Bute (GRAB) is working with other agencies across the peninsula to clean up the mess left by the storms last month.

A number have already been organised, including people coming together to clean the stretch of coast from South Ronachan Beach to Tayinloan organised by Kintyre Way ranger Owen Paisley on Saturday, February 4 2012.

The severe storms in January caused high tide strand lines to exceed their normal levels and in some cases spill over on roads and verges. The flotsam and jetsam consist mainly of plastic bottles, plastic sacks and fishing litter which has become quite the eyesore.

The GRAB Trust run a Beaches and Marine Litter Project that raises public awareness about the affects that Marine litter can have on the environment and the sea life, as well as organising beach cleans
