Saving money on your heating bills this winter

Saving money on your heating bills this winter

With the nights getting darker and the mercury starting to drop, it’s time to dust off the radiatorsand put the central heating on.
Find out how you could save money on your heating bills.
The cost of energy is rising year-on-year, so it’s more important than ever to find ways of cutting the costs.

With just a few simple changes you could start saving on your bills. And with the money left over, you could start building up the balance in your savings account and save for something special.

Check out our top tips for cutting your costs:

1. Shop around for a different supplier

The energy market is a competitive one, with many suppliers and pricing packages on offer. It’s easy to find out the cheapest tariff by using online price comparison tools. Just enter your postcode and these websites will compare prices from all the major suppliers in your area.

It’s a great way to see the best deal. Plus, switching your supplier is easy – usually your new supplier will handle everything for you once you’ve decided to move.

2. Think about how you pay

Many electricity and gas suppliers offer discounts when you pay by direct debit.

3. Choose the right rate

As well as their standard energy prices, most companies offer fixed- or capped-rate deals. They both protect you against rising energy prices. Fixed rate deals tie you in for a set time and fix the price you pay. Capped deals put a ceiling on how much you’ll pay. So if the energy price rises, the price you pay will either stay the same or rise only to a set limit. And with capped deals, if energy prices drop, so does the price you pay.

Check to see if your energy company offers these deals and see if you can save by switching from the standard rate.

4. Look for ‘dual fuel’ deals

If you have both gas and electricity in your home, shop around for suppliers that offer a discount when you buy both from them. Many suppliers will try to tempt you to sign up for both with a small discount. It makes managing your energy supply easier with just one supplier and means you’ll be saving money.

5. Insulate your home

Another great way to save money is to reduce the amount of energy you use.

Whether it’s simple solutions like fitting draught excluders on your doors or something bigger like installing double-glazed windows or insulating your loft, you can make your home more energy-efficient.

It means you won’t need as much heat to keep your home warm, saving you energy and money.
