SOUTH African Wayne Soutter has become the first person to swim the North Channel, from the Mull of Kintyre to the North Antrim coast, arriving near midnight on Sunday night.
The 43-year-old,who had already swum the English Channel, encountered six-foot waves and a solid mass of jellyfish during his 12 and-a-quarter hours in the water.
The effect of the notoriously strong currents in the channel meant he covered more than double the 20 kilometres the swim would be if done in a straight line.
For a full report including photographs and an exclusive interview with Wayne, see the Campbeltown Courier,August 31 2012 also on line at www. campbeltowncourier.co.uk/digital.
