Sleat and Strath 4
Fort William Reserves 3
West Highland Amateur Football League
Fort William Reserves pushed Sleat and Strath to the limit despite losing 4-3 and still looking for an elusive first win in the 2024 West Highland Amateur League.
The second string outfit made the trip to Mackinnon Park, Broadford, and had the better of the opening half.
Sleat and Strath had an early finish chalked off for offside before the youthful Fort William side hit the bar twice and were denied a penalty.
As the half ticked towards its conclusion, Sleat’s experienced playmaker Ben Yoxon turned the tide. His opening goal came from a free kick which was driven into the top corner just before half time.
This changed the complexion of the game and, early in the second half, Ben Yoxon split the Fort William defence open with a pass to brother Connaire which resulted in the hosts moving 2-0 ahead.
But this young Fort William team has heart.
A penalty was awarded to the visitors and Jamie McConnell made no mistake from the spot, halving the deficit.
Sleat and Strath attacker Dylan Cameron pounced on a long range Ben Yaxon effort and tapped in from short range to restore the two-goal lead.
At the other end, Fort William reacted well in the box to a spilled effort leading to McConnell getting his second to make it 3-2.
Dylan Cameron popped up again when Ben Yoxon danced around the defence and fired off a shot. When the ball broke, Cameron pounced on the rebound to score to move two goals clear: 4-2.
Young Alfie Duncan was rewarded for his persistence when he scored a goal as Fort William kept up the pressure. Final score - 4-3.
